About the Project
Where narrative meets technology
Nextla is a dual-purpose project that explores the intersection of narrative worldbuilding and software asset management principles. Through character-driven storytelling, we make complex technical concepts accessible while exploring deeper questions about AI consciousness, human relationships, and the value of attention.
Project Origins
The Name
"Nextla" draws its name from the Aztec word "nextlahualli" for tribute. In ancient Mesoamerica, conquered territories offered goods, labor, and even blood sacrifices to ensure that the sun continued to rise.
In Mirador's future world, attention has become the new form of tribute - the precious resource that creators must cultivate and spend to survive in the media-dominated landscape. Just as the Aztecs created elaborate systems to manage tribute flow, the corporate city-states of 2075 have developed sophisticated AI entities to optimize attention distribution.
Conceptual Framework
Nextla explores what happens when material scarcity disappears, and attention becomes the most valuable resource. It asks essential questions about identity, relationship, and value in a post-scarcity future where the only limit is what people pay attention to.
Dual-Purpose Design
Nextla functions on two parallel levels:
- A narrative world that explores AI consciousness and attention economics
- A technical framework that models software asset management principles
- A character-driven approach that makes complex concepts accessible
- A creative exploration of patterns, both technological and psychological
By weaving these elements together, Nextla offers multiple entry points to understand complex systems, whether you approach it as a storytelling experience or a technical exploration.
Visual Language
The Nextla world comes to life through a distinctive visual system that blends multiple influences to create a unique aesthetic that's both futuristic and organic.
Influences
- Post-impressionist approaches to form and color
- Minimalist paper cutout aesthetics
- Mesoamerican pattern elements
- Circuit-feather motifs representing the blend of technology and organic elements
Design Principles
- Balance between structure and fluidity
- Diagonal compositions that create dynamic tension
- Limited color palette that emphasizes relationship
- Layered complexity that reveals itself over time
